Leader ‘not offering hype’

The New Labour Party budget was a political statement to the people of New Zealand rather than an economic policy, said the party leader, Mr Jim Anderton.

In presenting the budget in his Sydenham electorate last evening, Mr Anderton told a gathering of about 200 that he could not offer them a lot of “hype.”

“This is a serious attempt to give the people of New Zealand some new hope and direction,” he said.

The budget was greeted warmly by the crowd and assurances that the N.L.P. would halt any further sale of publicly owned assets prompted an extra round of applause. After the meeting Mr Anderton said he was pleased with the attendance and the response to the party’s alternative budget. “Obviously the budget proposals struck a pretty responsive chord with those attending.”

Mr Anderton said the party’s proposals would give the public the chance to choose in a real democratic sense. “There is very little difference between National and Labour as they are both offering the same things. We are giving the people of New Zealand a choice.”

The budget was a political statement to let the public know the future direction of the N.L.P.
