Injury cuts trip short

A sprained ankle cut short a Christchurch nurse’s West Coast tramping trip last week-end. Ms Christine Waterman, tramping with three friends, sprained her ankle on a rock in the Copland Pass about midday on Sunday. One of the party walked two hours to the car-park at Karangarua to seek help from the Westland National Park Board. Four search and rescue personnel were flown into the area and spent an hour carrying the injured woman by stretcher to a bush-clearing where she was picked up by helicopter and flown to Franz Josef Glacier. She was treated and spent the night in the Whataroa Hospital before returning to Christchurch yesterday. The rest of the , party, according to the Whataroa police, resumed their journey, intending to climb Mount Sefton.
