Deans nears Canty record
By 808 SCHUMACHER Canterbury’s champion rugby fullback throughout the 1980 s, Robbie Deans, has never worried about records, although many have come his way throughout his illustrious footballing career. So it was no great news that Deans was genuinely surprised when it filtered around Lancaster Park on Saturday that he had equalled Fergie McCormick’s record of 1297 points for Canterbury scored between 1958 and 1975. Deans’ comment was that he had the help of plenty of good players to score the accumulated points. Unfortunately for Deans, the points attributed to him had been miscalculated and the spoken word and written word about his recordequalling feat were erroneous.
Before the start of the season, Deans had totalled 1156 points for Canterbury A. The 21 points he scoifd against Argentina
on Saturday advanced his season’s total to 131 and his Canterbury aggregate to 1287 — still 10 points behind McCormick’s final mark.
Almost certainly Robbie Deans will become the province’s most prolific points-scorer, but in the meantime, Fergie McCormick, the fullback who Deans, as a youngster, watched with awe, still has the Canterbury record. |
