$90,000 to go on new Riccarton roof

DAVID McCARTHY

By

While the proposed new stewards stand at Riccarton has been attracting publicity, work has already started on replacing the roof of the public stand at a cost of $90,000.

The iron roof was repaired about 10 years ago to fix damage suspected to have been caused by chemicals in the atmosphere from a nearby industrial plant, guided toward the stand by norwesterly winds.

The measures achieved the immediate aim but the roof has deteriorated over all to the extent that

it needs complete replacement.

The area of the stand, one of the highest structures in the district, is about 0.7 hectares. The job is expected to be completed by the Grand National meeting. The present stewards stand will be demolished after that meeting and temporary facilities established in the public stand. The jockeys and judicial rooms will be on the ground floor next to the parade Ring Bar. A temporary birdcage will be established in front of the public stand.
