Labour policies
Sir, —With the axe now poised to fall on local hospital services, one wonders whether or not the so-called Labour Government intends to legislate words like “compassion” and “humanity” out of our vocabulary. It-might as well, because such ideals are becoming increasingly meaningless within our presnt ruthlessly monetarist establishment. At a time when the community is in dire need of increased medical and social services, rather than fewer; we find them being, cut to the bone, ostensibly in the interests of fiscal efficiency;. There are some glaring contradictions in Government policies, not least of which is the frigate issue. An eventuality .which has been conspicuous by its absence in some sections of the media is that of the returning Singapore battalion. How can the Government justify maintaining this totally redundant military battalion within our present fragile economy? — Yours, etc., BILL FILSHIE. July. 17, 1989.
