Greyhounds Steiny Blue looks best bet in Cup

Although unplaced at Hutt Park on Monday, Steiny Blue must still be the dog to beat in The

Christchurch Star New Zealand Cup, the second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Christchurch Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park today. Having already won the “New Zealand Greyhound of the Year” title, Steiny Blue has proved her worth by defeating the best in the land up and down the country on numerous occasions.

The blue daughter of Thomas Earl showed the signs of an arduous campaign when finishing a disappointing fifth at Wellington on Monday, but trainer Thayne Green has had her aimed at the Cup for some time and he should have freshened her for the big test Miss Keytoe shot into calculations when she won the first of the Cup trials last month, and her

five-length winning margin suggests that the Hornby owner-trainer, Pat Martin, has the well-bred bitch hitting her straps to perfection. Another North Island visitor, Medusa caused a surprise when winning the distance feature at last Monday’s Wellington meeting, and she will be all the better for having raced at Q.E. II Park in recent months.

A previous winner of the race, Dawn Mist, has not shown her best form recently and would have to improve, while Call Me Grace and Mainland Magic have the early speed to stretch this field. Call Me Early gets his chance to recapture some form in the Shirley Veterinary Centre Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

The New Brightontrainer, Dennis Watson, has had his team firing well at recent meetings, and Call Me Early has suggested he is about to return to his form of old. In spite of some poor form when campaigned in the North Island, Shiny Band must be respected as she has performed so well as Q.E. II Park in the past.
