British Rail hit by fifth strike
NZPA-Reuter London
Britain prepared for its fifth one-day train strike yesterday, after leaders of the biggest rail union rejected a pay offer. The National Union of Railwaymen kept commuters guessing all day about whether there would be a train to catch in the morning. At the end of a 10-hour union meeting yesterday, the N.U.R. leader, Jimmy Knapp, said the strike would go ahead. “The British Rail Board’s offer of an 8.8 per cent increase in basic pay is unacceptable,” he said. Two unions representing train drivers and clerical staff have accepted the offer.
