Auckland shopping area allowed Sunday trading
PA Auckland The Shop Trading Hours Commission has approved an application from shop owners in Parnell, Auckland, to open on Sundays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A Parnell shop proprietor, Mr Alistair Cam- .. mell, who played a .big. role in the area being granted permission to ? trade on Saturdays, was ecstatic at the prospect of opening his door for business on Sunday.
Parnell was leading the way for the introduction of Sunday trading in other areas of Auckland. The owner of a men’s boutique, Mr Kon Khan, said the extended trading hours would bring people back to the Parnell shopping area and provide a much-needed focus for overseas tourists visiting Auckland. / Ms Nancy King, whose father, Mr Les Harvey, created the Parnell Village concept, said yester-
day’s announcement was a great victory. An application in 1983 had been rejected. Applications for exemption by individual retailers had also, failed. The Northern Distribution Workers’ Union, which objected to the application, said the move was a retrograde step. But a union organiser, Mr Peter Monteith, would not comment further until he saw a copy of the decision.
