Croquet win
NZPA London New Zealand’s quartet at the first world croquet championships had mixed success in doubles matches at Hurlingham in London yesterday. ' The Auckland pair, Bob Jackson and Joseph Hogan, New Zealand doubles champions on eight occasions, won their first round match in straight games, beating English pair David Wiggins and Tony Mrozinski 26-17, 26-3. ■ But John Prince of Christchurch and Paui Skiniey of Wellington bowed out after a marathon second round contest against a strong Scottish combination of Andrew Hope and Martin Murray. The Scots pair finally won 26-17, 24-26, 26-12, in a seven-
hour battle which did not finish until after 10pm local time. Three of the New Zealand team, excluding Jackson, have first round singles matches tomorrow. On a day of upset results several seeds were beaten. Englishman Nigel Aspinall, seeded in the top group of four players, lost his singles match against another English player, S Cornish, in three games. Cornish and D. Reeve then eliminated favoured English combination Mark Avery and David Openshaw 26-21, 26-21 in the doubles. Two Australian seeds in the singles, George Latham and Alan Cleland, went down in straight games to English opponents.
