Sir, —You were wrong to assert in your editorial (July 7) that detailed costing’ of the scheme, and its workability had not been done. It was. — Yours, etc. SIR JAMES STEWART, Chairman, Student Loans Working Party. July 13,1989.
[Our editorial was qualified in its comment on the detailed costing and said that the work “does not seem to have been done.” Sir James Stewart’s assurance that work had been done is accepted; the disclosing of those detailed costings to show how or whether they supported the introduction of the student loans scheme would make a valuable contribution to the present debate. — Editor.l
