Bed contract to Chch firm

A Christchurch bedding manufacturer has won a big contract to supply Wellington’s Parkroyal Hotel. The Ferryway Mattress Company, Ltd, will make 600 pieces of bedding for the 250room luxury hotel, being built by Fletcher Construction in Featherstone Street. “We’re quite tickled to land a big one in the North Island. In many years in the bedding trade we have found it has not been easy to get our products across Cook Strait,” the company’s managing director, Mr Chris Brownie, said yesterday. Mr Brownie praised enterprising South Island freight-forward-ers for providing rates that enabled Ferryway

to compete successfully for the contract. The Moorhouse Avenue factory, which employs a staff of 25, will start work on the contract next month, making quilted wadding innersprung mattresses and using South Island native timber in the bed frames. Mr Brownie said the company’s installation crew was expected to begin work in Wellington in late November, when the first floors of the new Parkroyal were ready for occupation. “There appears to be a slightly more positive outlook to the tourist trade and the contract has enabled us not-to have to contemplate any redundancies,” he said.
