PA Wellington The name of the man charged with the murder of Karla Cardno, aged 13, remains suppressed pending a Court of Appeal decision today. Mr Justice Jeffries at first refused to continue the suppression order, yesterday morning, but the defending lawyer, Ms Celia Caughey, said she would apply to the Court of Appeal for a ruling. Mr Justice Jeffries, returning to the Bench in the afternoon, said he had been told the Court of Appeal had agreed to hear Miss Caughey’s application today at 9.30 a.m. Interim suppression of
name, granted when the man first appeared in the District Court at Lower Hutt on Monday, was continued. Lawyers say it is uncommon for the Court of Appeal to hear a matter at such short notice. However, they say, the Court’s agreement in such cases would be in accordance with the principle that the position that the High Court has ruled against should be allowed to continue for a minimum period. The man, a labourer, aged 28, was charged with the murder of the Taita schoolgirl, whose body was found buried in Pencarrow last Sunday.
