Home for disabled

Sir,— I was interested to read about the Laura Fergusson Home for the disabled (June 28). Mrs Noelene Mcllroy praises the rehabilitation programme run by the home, and the increased opportunities provided for residents to move into the community. I was wondering if Mrs Mcllroy, or some other representative would be able to respond, as I am keen to know very specifically what type of training and assistance is offered by the home to enable residents to move .out and live independently. Also, I would like to know whether any other group or agency is called upon in addition to help a Laura Fergusson resident wanting this type of (rehabilitation? I am sure this information would also be of interest to many other readers. — Yours, etc., CAROL HOY. June 30, 1989.

[The matron of the Laura Fergusson Home, Mrs Marie Woods, replies: “Our complex offers both long and short-term placements for partially dependent physically disabled adults. All residents have the choice to stay in the home long term if they maintain the required level of independence. However, if they wish to further their living skills I have the experience to recognise and to implement some of the necessary training. Because the various challenges we face each day are beyond our means, we rely heavily on the Crippled Childrens Society for its valued support and other community organisations for their assistance. Training in the home varies, depending on an individual resi-

dent’s capabilities and needs. If Miss Hoy or any other reader wishes to contact the home I would be pleased to show them our training facilities and explain the programmes in operation at present.”]
