Assurance given on childcare
An important policy issue for the new Christchurch City Council will be to define its role in the community service area, including childcare, says the Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay.
Speaking at the opening of Barnados’ new Christchurch premises yesterday, Sir Hamish said the present City Council had a strong commitment to childcare through creches and day care centres. He congratulated Barnardos on its achievements in Christchurch, saying it was now recognised as an important force in work with children and families, particularly those in stress. Sir Hamish said broken homes were widespread and the effects of unemployment added to the problems which its staff were confronted with. The first years of a child’s life were important, but many families seemed not to be giving their children a good start. “Barnardos is playing a very constructive role to deal with many of these problems,” he said. \
