M.O.T. kept busy
Wet road conditions in Christchurch yesterday had Ministry of Transport officers attending 16 accidents between 3 p.m. and midnight. Seven of the accidents resulted in injuries, one serious, said Senior-Sergeant lan Freeman. A man suffered serious leg injuries in a collision between a motor-cycle and a car he was pushing on the comer of Blenheim Road and Wharenui Road. The accident happened soon before 6 p.m. Another man pushing the car and the motor-cyclist received minor injuries. Many of last evening’s accidents were caused by vehicles following too closely, said Senior-Sergeant Freeman. Man killed by train A Bryndwr man died when struck by a train yesterday morning near Mona Vale, in Fendalton. He was Edward Ormer Golledge, aged 35, of Truman Road. The accident occurred about 6.30 a.m. on the stretch of track between Fendalton Road and Kilmarnock Street. An inquest has been opened. Harris remanded Milton Windsor Harris, an American, has been remanded to Mount Eden Prison for a further fortnight. Harris, aged 43, did not apply for bail when he appeared in the District Court at Auckland yesterday. He was before the Court on charges of shoplifting, escaping from custody and intentional damage. Harris was remanded until July 26.—PA. Natural causes The police are satisfied that the death of a man who was driving a car which left Russley Road on Tuesday afternoon resulted from natural causes. St John ambulance staff unsuccessfully attempted to revive the man, Thomas Godfrey Jackson, aged 68, whose car came to rest in a paddock. An inquest is expected to be held. Karla’s funeral The funeral service for Karla Cardno, aged 13, will be held in Lower Hutt’s Horticultural Hall at 10 a.m., next Monday and will be followed by a private cremation. The Taita schoolgirl’s body was found last Sunday. A man, aged 28, has been charged with her murder. The police said uasterday they had released hefljbody.—PA.
