Support justified
The more the rain fell at Trentham yesterday the faster the price about Nui Whero fell for the Petone Handicap and he justified that support by winning easily.
However backers could not have been on the best of terms with themselves with half of the 1600-metre distance covered when Nui Whero was near last. But his
rider, David Walsh, was not concerned. Walsh, producing tactics Grant Davison would have been proud of over the winter Riccarton meetings, eased early so he could improve very wide near the turn and grab the best going by the outside running rail. Once there Nui Whero wore down a game Brierley with Kereru Prince
also coming from well back for third. Nui Whero struck good form on soft tracks in the spring and Walsh was encouraged by his first-day run when assessing yesterday’s chances'. “He went a good one the first day and copped a bit of a check as well. (The extra distance today suited him,” Walsh said.
