Netherlands favoured
NZPA-Reuter Madison, NJ. The Netherlands confirmed its status as favourite to win the Intercontinental Cup men’s hockey tournament by completing its Pool A play with an emphatic 6-0 win over United States yesterday. The former Olympic champion, New Zealand, India’s final opening round opponent, is one point behind with six after four games, but will need a win or a draw to advance.
France, one point further back, is threatening to push New Zealand into third as it appears almost certain of picking up two points when it plays Winless Chile in its final group match today. Should India and New Zealand play a draw, France would need to beat Chile by more than six goals to overtake New Zealand on goal difference. The Netherlands advanced to the semi-final round with nine points for five games
having conceded one point in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Canada. Canada also clinched a semi-final berth yesterday with three first half goals to beat Zimbabwe, S-0, and finish second in Pool A, one point behind the Netherlands.
The teams to advance from Pool B will be decided after today’s games. India heads the group with seven points from four games after salvaging a 2-2 draw yesterday with a goal 12s from the end of its contest with Egypt. India nearly dropped its first game after three wins when it trailed Egypt, 2-1, in the closing seconds. Jagbir Singh scored the equaliser with 12s left to keep his team at the top of the table.
Mukesh Kumar had given India the lead after 17 minutes, but Egypt threatened an upset with goals from Magdi Abdulla in the
32nd minute and Ibrahim Tawfik after 58 minutes. United States had an unfortunate start against the Netherlands when the goalkeeper, Steve Wagner, was injured after only five minutes and taken from the field suffering from a suspected broken elbow.
Floris Jan Boveiander gave the Netherlands the *,ead after 14 minutes and goals sfrom Marc Delissen (26 Cruco (35 min), Taco Van'oejn Jl2rner'. (44 min), Boveiander (55 min) and Delissen (61 min) completed the rout that handed United States its fourth consecutive loss after winning its first game.
Wolciech Klatt scored two goals to lead Poland to a 5-0 win over Chile for its first Pool B win.
