AUSTRALIA Blue-chips follow lead of Wall St—up

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher yesterday with sharp gains by blue-chip stocks. The all-ordinaries index closed 9.8 points higher at 1537.3. Dealers said the 25point rise on Wall Street on Friday boosted the domestic market. The rise on the Dow Jones Index followed the release of better-than-expected U.S. employment figures for June which reduced fears of an American recession. "Providing the Australian dollar remains stable or eases, we should see the market continue to gain over the week," one local broker said. The all-industrials index rose 11.6 points to 2480.3, the all-resources 8.1 points to 825.4 and the gold marker 21.8 points to 1519.2. National turnover was 89.76 M shares worth sAustl96.43M. Price rises led falls, 186 to 156. News Corp led the rises, up 50c at 1570 c on renewed U.S. interest in the international media stock. BHP and CRA each lifted 12c to 894 c and 886 c respectively.
