Coach excited by men’s win

Aub Atchison, coach of the Aranui senior men’s Canterbury club basketball team, could hardly contain himself after his team comprehensively defeated its closest challenger, University, 85-56, at Cowles Stadium, on Saturday. Mr Atchison, who had been associated with the club for more than a decade, was still bubbling an hour after the end of the match. "It would have to be one of the best team efforts Aranui has turned on in years,” he - said as his side continues its unbeaten 1989 record. Apart from a lack-lustre second quarter, Aranui played at its full potential and every player, from the starting five to the bench “warmers” contributed. However, Mike Shaw, the University coach, was critical of officialdom. “Larry Hubbard (the Aranui centre and chief points’ scorer) is getting away with murder,” said Mr Shaw later. "I want this in print — the referees are shying clear of penalising him because of the Easter tournament when he had a shout-up with referees questioning their decisions. The Canterbury Basketball Association has still to make up its mind about a ruling for or against Hubbard and four months have passed.” In the first match, Junction (Rangiora) went out like a “bomb” against Checkers, faltered in the second quarter and then came back in the second half to win, 79-74.

With four games left, Aranui looks assured of the title. Aranui 85, University 56 Aranui: L. Hubbard 26, C. Dobbs 15, P. Hill 13, p. Nouata 9, H. Timms 8, R. Davis and D. Watson, both 6, T. McGill 2.
