Win to de Groot

Peter de Groot ended his role as the best man in snooker circles last evening when he beat Dave Meredith. in the final of the Canterbury senior championships at Cuthberts Green. De Groot has been runner-up to the title twice but claimed a tight 5-4 victory over the favourite with some timely play. Meredith commented after the game that he played “too negatively.” He recently won the Canterbury billiards title for the tenth time and was hoping for a tenth title in the snooker championships. Results:— Quarter-finals: Dave' Meredith beat Mark Canovan, 4-0; Stan Maffey beat Garry Gillard, 4-0; Peter de Groot beat Peri Lilli, 4-0; Brian Kirkness beat Barry Ede, 4-1. Top break: De Groot 56. Semi-finals: Meredith beat Maffey, 4-2; de Groot beat Kirkness, 4-1. Final: De Groot beat Meredith 5-4.
