Dogs destroyed after attacks on women
PA Wellington The Wanganui police shot dead one dog and had two others destroyed after three people were attacked in the city on Tuesday. The three dogs attacked two women and an eight-year-old boy about 9.20 p.m. in a suburban street. Senior-Sergeant Nigel Mcßae said the first woman attacked suffered several bites.
As the woman was being helped by a passing motorist, the dogs turned and attacked a second woman and her son who were walking on the other side of the street. The woman and her son were not hurt, but were badly shaken.
When the police arrived, one of the dogs turned on a constable and was shot on the spot. The police caught the other two dogs, which were put down by a dog ranger.
It was the second incident of the evening involving dogs. The police were called to a domestic incident at 8.10 p.m. and were confronted by a man and a doberman dog. Senior-Sergeant Mcßae said when the police approached the man, he ordered the dog to attack. The police were able to frighten off the dog, which ran back into the house. The man became violent and had to be restrained. He was arrested and charged with assault.
