Wrestlers disappoint

PA Wellington The New Zealand wrestling team can only improve from its outing at the United States international freestyle wrestling championships, the manager, Keith Scott, said from Colorado yesterday. Scott said a combination of travel weariness, high altitude and the extremely high standard of competition led to a disappointing result. The five-strong New Zealand squad lost all 10 of its bouts at the Colorado Springs championship On June 23-24. The event, the first leg of the New Zealanders’ North American tour, attracted a strong field from Russia, Bulgaria, West Germany, France, Korea, Cuba, Canada and the United States. The New Zealand team — Brett Hunter (57kg), Dean Sundborn (62kg), Trent Scott (68kg), Michael Loader (90kg) and Gavjn Avery (100 kg — now travels to Canada, where it will wrestle a Toronto team.
