'Sale’ breaks all records
“Sale of the Century” has broken all New Zealand records for a longrunning show. Last week, it attracted more than 47 per cent of all viewers — unheard of for a regular series.
The closest past high performers have got to that figure is 46 per cent for an episode of “The Cosby Show” in 1986, 44 per cent for two editions of the “Billy T. James Show” the same year, and 39 per cent for a number of “Flying Doctors” instalments.
In the past, only rugby test matches and royal weddings have boasted, such massive audiences. The latest AGB:McNair Audience Survey shows that on Monday, June 12, “Sale of the Century” was watched by 47.4 per cent of the possible audi-
ence, up 2.8 percentage points on the previous week’s best.
Tuesday’s programme took second place in the top 50, drawing 46.4 per cent of viewers and for the rest of the week took fifth, sixth and seventh places. “Holmes” beat “Neighbours” hand-down once again. The local current affairs show rated fourteenth, fifteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and twenty-first, while “Neighbours” failed to make the top 20. On the whole, the week was a bonanza for New Zealand-made programmes.
“A Dog’s Show” clocked in at number 24, “A Question of Sport” at 32, “Frontline” at 35, “Mastermind” at 42 and “Shark in the Park” at 47.
