39 brave cold dip

PA Wellington Bravery is relative. Those who made a splash at the mid-winter polar bear dips round New Zealand in the last few days might balk at the thought of a repeat performance at Scott Base. Thirty-nine hardy swimmers threw caution to the polar wind and leaped into —2 deg. water at Scott Base’s annual mid-winter plunge on Sunday.

But before they could be like polar bears, they had to cut a hole in 1.5 m ice in total darkness. With the air temperature —26 deg., all 12 members of the base’s winter-over staff and 27 from McMurdo Base immersed themselves, briefly, in the icy water. The big turnout made it the most successful plunge in the base’s swim club records, said a spokesman for the Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R.
