in Wellington New Zealand will be represented at a Pacific trade policy forum meeting in Canada beginning today. The meeting has been called by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference and will discuss prospects for the G.A.T.T. Uruguay round. New Zealand will be represented by the deputy chairman
of the Institute of Policy Studies, Sir Frank Holmes, the president of the Manufacturers’ Federation, Mr Barry Brill, and an Assistant Secretary of External Relations and Trade, Mr David Gamble. The conference came at a significent time for world trade, said the Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore. The Uruguay round was just moving again after disagreement on agricultural reform
between the United States and the European Community had resulted in the entire multilateral negotiations being put on hold at the end of last year. All countries were now assessing where to go from here, he said. A lot of hard work was still needed if the round were to succeed. Agricultural protection and prospects for liberalisation in financial services, civil aviation
and tourism were among the issues to be discussed at the Vancouver meeting today. Mr Moore said the aim was to come up with some fresh ideas and strategies that would apply to the Pacific region, which could then be floated at the Uruguay round. Participants would be Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, China, South Korea and the South-East Asian nations, as well as New Zealand.
