Chch boxers fight well

While bouts involving visiting competitors tended to fill the limelight, there were several fine efforts by members of Christchurch gymnasiums at last Sunday’s Canterbury Boxing Association tournament.

Uppermost among them was Anthony Woolcott’s third-round win over Mathew Doolan.

Woolcott (Papanui) produced what was probably his best performance to stop Doolan, from the Olympic gymnasium. Boxing with great assurance and finesse, Woolcott used the dimensions of the ring to advantage and caught Doolan with a well-timed punch to the head to force the stoppage. John Barclay (Olympic) continued his personal duel with Darrell Gordon (Bell’s), his unanimous points victory extending their sequence to 3-2 in favour of the improving Barclay. Their welterweight bout contained plenty of action as Barclay took the fight to Gordon and built up a handy points lead with sharp combinations.
