Death sentence

NZPA-AFP Peking A Shanghai taxi driver is to be executed for breaking into the United States Consulate in Shanghai four times between December, 1986, and February, 1988, a Shanghai newspaper said. Zhang Ping’s fate was sealed when the Shanghai Higher People’s Court rejected his appeal, the “Wen Hui Bao” newspaper said. Zhang, who once served three years in jail for theft, was sentenced to death in April for stealing 33,000 yuan ($NZ15,650) in cash, ornaments and cameras from the consulate, which is housed in a one-time tycoon’s home in Shanghai.

He was also accused of stealing goods worth 6000 yuan ($NZ2,790) in nearby Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
