Volleyball Fereti sparks Smash
A run of excellent serves by Toa Feret: sparked Aranui Smash to a 3-1 win over Shirley A in southern league women’s volleyball at Pioneer Stadium on Saturday. Fereti’s serves broke open a tight match for Smash, one of the early favourites for the national women’s title in Auckland next month. Smash took the first set, 1512, but Shirley fought back strongly to take the second set. 15-13. However, Smash lifted its work rate to take the next two sets, 15-10, 15-8. of Dunedin. In the men’s competition the tight battle for the fourth qualifying place for the national championships continued. Shirley Relics lost to Scorpions, 3-1, but then bounced back to down Smash, 3-1. The Relics took the first two sets, 15-12, 15-8, but lost concentration in the third set and Smash won, 15-10. The Relics overcame some stern resistance to take the fourth and final set, 15-13.
Relics’ open hitters, Keith Moorfield and Craig “Tuck” Lange, stood out for the winner now equal fourth with Scorpions, which lost, 3-1, to
Smash yesterday morning. However, Scorpions has a much better set difference than the Relics, who are hoping fervently that Smash will beat its Dunedin rival when they next meet.
