Hui forges new Maori tribal congress

A new “Maori congress” which will represent most Maori tribes has been welcomed by the chairman of the Ngai Tahu Trust Board, Mr Tipene O’Regan. The congress was forged at a hui in Turangi on Saturday. About 200 people from more than 50 tribes attended.
Mr O’Regan said it had been clear for some time that a group was needed to represent Maoridom at a national level. The New Zealand Maori Council had not been appropriate because the focus had shifted to iwi (tribal) development, Mr O’Regan said. “The council does not have a tribal base, and has been an
effective voice for some areas, but not for others.” The new congress would be able to negotiate the devolution process with the Crown, Mr O’Regan said. “However, while it will be able to speak for Mabridom nationally, it will not be able to speak for Ngai Tahu before the courts. “The treaty partner is the
tribe, and you cannot supplant the mana of a particular tribe.” Mr O’Regan said details about the new congress, including its final name and its functions, had still to be decided. The outcome of the Turangi hui would be discussed at tribal level, and a further meeting of tribal representatives will be held in August.
