Land claim not against private owners —Palmer
By
OLIVER RIDDELL
in Wellington The news media is misleading the public about a Maori land claim before the Waitangi Tribunal, according to the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer. He was referring to reports on a Northland
Maori claim over priv-ately-owned land, which the tribunal was considering.
Some reports had suggested that this was the first such Maori claim on private land and that it was against the private
owners of the land. But it was a claim against the Crown and not the private owners, Mr Palmer said. It was not the first such claim. He said the tribunal only had the right to make a recommendation about the claim.
