Call for police, M.O.T. to unite
PA Wellington A Wellington city and regional councillor, Ken Boyden, has called for the amalgamation of the Police Department and the Ministry of Transport, Mr Boyden, a former policeman, said yesterday that police cutbacks and previous economies imposed on the Ministry were a strong agrument for the two organisations to amalgamate. Together, the two would constitute a much more economical use of manpower and equipment. Mr Boyden queried the need for two separate training colleges, the need to duplicate spending for many buildings, computer equipment and vehicles. If amalgamated, he said, the police and traffic agencies would be a service able to answer a call more quickly and efficiently. “At present, it is very rare that a policeman reports an accident or reports someone for an alleged driving offence. “On the other hand, you never find a traffic officer attending the scene of a crime or answering to some other civil disturbance.”
