Modern masters
Sir, —What a splendid and exciting occasion it was on Wednesday evening at the opening of the United New Zealand Modern Masters Collection. At a time when New Zealand is struggling to find a national identity and more people pass through gallery and museum doors than sports fields it is vital that young artists receive more public support. The raw, uncivilised and often violent nature of our society will be improved by the arts and we thus applaud the vision and generosity of the policy makers of United in this major public display travelling all over New Zealand as an outreach programme. Colin Jenkins reminded us of the size and importance of United to the Christchurch scene — their fiveyear acquisition commitment to the visual arts and the acquisition of middle career, southern artists such as Hotere, Peebles, Blair and Trustum and rising stars such as Frazer, Braithwaite, and Hammond should be an example and inspiration to other companies. All positive Christchurch citizens must see this major exhibition at the C.S.A. — Yours, etc., TERRY BEAVEN, DON BEAVEN. June 20, 1989.
