Canadians look at Games ideas

PA Auckland A Canadian delegation is in Auckland looking at ways of involving natives of British Columbia in the Commonwealth Games next year. Victoria 8.C., will be host to the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and the party of four is in Auckland to look at heightening their indigenous people's Auckland involvement. Possibilities include raising a totem pole at the Mount Smart closing ceremony. Heading the delegation

is Mr Gordon Hanson, Victoria’s member of the Legislative Assembly in British Columbia.

He said no plans were finalised — a series of meetings with Games officials were to begin yesterday — but raising and even carving the totem pole in Auckland was one idea.

A large totem pole, carved with outstretched arms and known as a welcome pole, could be raised in Auckland at the 1990 Games to symbolise a general invitation to the next event.
