Student who stopped tanks prize nominee

NZPA-AAP Sydney A Chinese student who risked his life to stop a convoy of tanks near Peking’s Tiananmen Square has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. The action of the student, Wang Li Lin, was seen by millions as film footage of his oneman stand was broadcast throughout the world. The young man stood in front of a convoy of tanks, halting them outside the Beijing Hotel and preventing them from continuing towards Tiananmen Square, before being dragged off by bystanders.

Earlier this week news media from China reported that he had been executed. After the news of the student’s death, Dr Robert Woods, Federal member of Parliament for Lowe in New South Wales, wrote to the Norwegian Nobel Committee seeking international recognition for the student’s “amazing courage.” “On several occasions in the past few years the Nobel Peace Prize has been given to recipients of dubious merit because there have been no worth-while alternative recipients,” wrote Dr Woods.
