Gondola delay attacked

The Government is “procrastinating” over the Port Hills gondola, says a Waimairi District councillor. Cr Brian Shackel attacked the Minister of Conservation, Mr Woollaston, for putting off a decision on whether the gondola should be allowed on Mount Cavendish scenic reserve. Cr Shackel told the council’s meeting last evening that the Minister’s delay was costing the developer, Payeo Developments, Ltd, money. Christchurch was also missing out on valuable tourist revenue, he said. The Minister’s office said last week that the long-awaited decision would be made soon.

Mr Woollaston is awaiting an O.K. on his decision from the Solicitor-General, Mr Paul Neazor. The decision’s announcement is now expected tomorrow or early next week.
