Salmon smolt for port
The first release of salmon smolt into Lyttelton Harbour is planned for next month. The newly formed Lyttelton Salmon Fishing Club, made up of Rotary members and residents, plans to release 10,000 smolt into the harbour, which they say could become a fishine
“mecca” in three years. It was hoped to emulate the success of salmon releases into Otago Harbour by the Otago Salmon Anglers’ Association since 1986. These have yielded the highest returns to anglers in the country, according to publicity material, with some catches in the 4.5 kg to 9kg range.
