Aust. stocks close easier

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian share market drifted to a lower close in subdued, trading following the higher than expected April retail sales figure, dealers said. They said the seasonally adjusted rise of 0.8 per cent to sAust6.6B billion in April created a sellers’ market. “The April figure underlined - the fact that interest rates are likely to stay high for some time,” said a Jardine Fleming senior dealer. The all ordinaries index closed 8.4 points lower at 1528.2. Hooker Corp bounced off an early low of 45 cents to be eight down at 56 cents on turnover of 3.90 million shares. Lend Lease and CRA led the decliners, each losing 20 to 10.10 and 8.62 respectively. Among the retailers, Coles Myer fell 18 to 8.30 and David Jones lost 10 to 10.30.
