Patrons miss armed hold-up
PA Tauranga A Tauranga security guard, Mr Jason Harris, was lying flat on the ground, a gun on his back, as Waihi Beach Hotel patrons wound up their Saturday evening drinking — oblivious to an armed hold-up on their doorstep.
Mr Harris, aged 22, a Securitas guard, had collected the pub’s week-end takings about 9.50 p.m. and was putting the $3OOO in cash and cheques into the security car when he was robbed.
“Just as I left the building to get into the car to put the money in the safe, they came running around from
the bushes,” he said yesterday.
“The first one looked like a terrorist. He had a balaclava and shotgun and that sort of carry-on.”
A second man was also carrying a firearm, as well as a large knife, with which he motioned to Mr Harris’s wife, Denise, that she should face the front. Mr Harris said the armed men forced him to the ground. While one guarded him with the shotgun the other took the hotel’s takings and rummaged through the security car’s safe.
Mr Harris said the evening was a nightmare.
