Twelve wards in new Christchurch City
Christchurch City will be split into 12 wards under local government reform. They are the Burwood, Fendalton, Ferrymead, Bagley, Heathcote, Papanui, Pegasus, Riccarton, Shirley, Spreydon, Waimairi and Wigram wards. Each of the wards will elect two members to the new Christchurch City Council. The new city, which includes the present city area, Waimairi, Heathcote, Riccarton, part of Paparua. and part of Rangiora District, must establish six service centres around the city at locations to be determined by the new council. The city will have six community boards covering its 12 wards. The commission has determined these pairings of wards for the boards: Burwood and Pegasus, Fendalton and Waimairi, Hagley and Ferrymead, Riccarton and Wigram, Shirley and Papanui, and Spreydon and Heathcote. Each pairing will have a community board of ward councillors and six elected community representatives, three from each ward. The Canterbury reform scheme contained an indicative map showing the ward break-up but detailed maps were not authorised for release. The indicative map shows the city boundary along the Waimakariri River from its mouth to near the end of Chattertons Road, along Chattertons Road, along Dawsons Road, and across to the boundary of the Banks Peninsula District on Summit Road. The boundary is believed to loop round houses at Templeton to keep them in Christchurch City, then follows the railway to Marshes Road, along Marshes Road, Springs Road, Hodgens Road, Fountains Road, Whincops Road, Halswell Junction Road, Kennedys Bush Road, past the Halswell quarantine and up Early Valley Road to the Summit Road. That would leave Templeton and Yaldhurst in the city and Prebbleton out.
