Hanson sent off; Burndale loses

The former All White striker, John Hanson, was sent off for the second time this season as Burndale United tumbled to a 1-0 loss against Dunedin City in the southern league soccer competition in Dunedin on Saturday.

Hanson, who joined Burndale from Christchurch United this season, also got a red card in the opening round.

His offence on Saturday was to argue with a linesman and the referee, Alan McGregor, dismissed the big striker with one minute left. Hanson will miss the next match against Oamaru this Saturday and could get an even longer suspension depending on the Canterbury Football Association’s judicial committee.

The sending off rubbed salt into the wounds of Burndale, which had by far the better match after falling behind to an eighth-minute goal. In other games the leader, Christchurch United reserves, beat Mosgiel 4-1 to maintain its one point lead over Dunedin City. Burndale is now five points back in third place while Rangers moved up to fourth with a solid 2-0 win over Caversham.

In the other match Technical and Oamaru battled to a 0-0 draw. Points

The draw for this Saturday is:— Christchurch v. Rangers; Green Island v. Technical; Oamaru v. Burndale; Caversham v. Western; Mosgiel v. Dunedin City. A depleted Dunedin City side, without seven of its squad through injury or unavailability, had to battle hard for its 1-0 win over Burndale at a sunny Caledonian Ground. The home side took the lead after 8 minutes when a Rod Fleming cross found Graham Carr in space. The talented midfielder had time to chest the ball down and volley home. From that point Burndale hammered away at City, forcing 21 corners and eight free kicks around the penalty box.

Only a brave display by the stand-in goalkeeper, Paul Chalmers, stopped it scoring. He was in the thick of the action with City only managing sporadic breakways when Burndale lost possession. Its experienced midfielder, Peter Ross, was in fine form but even he could not find the key to unlock the City defence.

At Mosgiel the home side was dumped 4-1 by Christchurch United with Brent Berry getting three goals and Julyan Falloon the other. Mark Sampson replied for Mosgiel, which is firmly anchored to the bottom of the table.

Berry now has eight goals for the season to' be second top scorer behind Jeff Hawker, of Burndale.

At Rangers Park in Christchurch the lowly Caversham side held Rangers until the second half of a dull match which produced little goal mouth action or constructive build-ups.

Rangers was clearly the better side in midfield in the second half where lan Cowans and Luke Campfens shone and it was Cowans who got the scoring started with a penalty after 65 minutes.

The striker, Paul Dabner,

was bundled down in the penalty area by a Caversham defender and Cowans stepped up for the spot kick.

He hit it straight at the goalkeeper, Gus Mawston. but the ball bounced off him and into the bottom right-hand corner for a 1-0 lead.

If that goal was a trifle fortunate there was nothing lucky about the second, which arrived 5 minutes later.

Dabner, who had a lively match up front, got in a good cross from the left and the substitute, Trevor Gilbert, arrived in the box to head superbly past Mawston.

Caversham. which defended well enough but lacked any attacking firepower, hit the bar soon after but there was only going to be one winner after the second Rangers' goal. In the other match played in Christchurch, Technical squandered some useful chances against the improved Oamaru side at Ensors Road, the match finishing 0-0.

The Christchurch United national league team will travel to face Dunedin City in the final southern region round of the Chatham Cup on Julv 9.

In the other tie Woolston W.M.C. will entertain Burndale United at Garrick Park in what promises to be an absorbing match. Other ties throughout the country are.— Mount Wellington’ v. Waitakere City: Mount Maunganui v. Howick; Oratia v. Rotorua; PoriruaViard v. Miramar: New Plymouth v. Wellington Olympic; Wellington United v. Waterside.
