Sponsorship of sport
Sir, — New Zealand, a small country, sells a formidable commodity, “sport,” on the world horizon — rugby, cricket, tennis and bowls. It boosts recognition in hosting world rugby and bowls and Commonwealth participation. Rothmans has poured substantial sums of money and resources into national bowls annually since 1977; the power behind a top sport, bowls. Bowls has replied with singles world champions, Peter Bellis and lan Dickison, ambassadors of New Zealand on the green. There were golds in the 1988 world bowls in the pairs and triples and a silver in the fours. There is no doubt that were it not for a strong dedication and involvement in sport, New Zealand’s crime rate would substantially increase. Rothmans adheres strictly to advertising regulations; their products are not crime-related. A
non-smoker, I strongly support Rothmans Sports Foundation involvement and participation. — Yours, etc., ALAN C. RUSSELL. June 2, 1989.
