Private nursing levels ‘too low’

PA Wellington Nursing staff levels in private hospitals are sometimes “appallingly low and totally inadequate,” the secretary of the Nurses Union, Ms Steph Breen, says. Ms Breen told the union’s conference in Wellington on Saturday that staff levels contained in the private hospital regulations were too low for satisfactory standards to be maintained. “In many cases, the only factor guaranteeing satisfactory standard of care is the dedication and skills of nurses who, at times, are working in difficult situations with low staffing levels,” she said. “Many private hospitals maintain satisfactory standards and are good employers. But some do not see quality care as a priority and it is these owners the elderly must be protected from through adequate legislation on staffing levels.”
