Trophy holder beaten

NZPA-Reuter

West Berlin

Unfancied India created a big upset by defeating the host, West Germany, the Olympic silver medallist, 3-2, on the opening day of the annual Champions Trophy hockey tournament at the week-end. West Germany, strongly favoured to win the trophy for the fourth time in a row, had not been beaten by India in eight successive matches and not since they last met in West Berlin four years ago. But India, sixth at the Seoul Olympics, shocked it by taking a first-half lead against the run of play and added two quick goals early in the second half to move 3-0 in front. The West Germans fought back gamely but the leeway was too great to make up.
