Kingslea youth badly hurt in stolen car

A youth from Christchurch’s Kingslea Resource Centre was seriously injured last evening in an accident involving an unlawfully taken car. The youth, aged 13, and a companion, aged 14, were reported missing from the Social Welfare Department home in Horseshoe Lake Road about 3.30 p.m. Inspector Chris Cole, of the Christchurch police, said a resident in Maces Road, Bromley, telephoned the police at 5.28 p.m. to

complain of two youngsters, said to be aged about 12, joy-riding in a Hillman Super Minx car. The police left for Bromley but soon after received a report from a member of the public concerned at the speed of the car through Hornby. It spun out and rolled shortly after 6 p.m. on the Main South Road just south of Templeton. “The passenger, aged 13, was . possibly thrown from the car. He was unconscious when the

police arrived,” said Mr Cole. He was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital with serious head injuries. The other youth escaped with minor injuries. He was also taken to Christchurch Hospital, but was expected to be treated and discharged. Mr Cole said the car, taken from near the Glenbyre Tavern in Keighleys Road, Linwood, was reported missing at 5.40 p.m.
