Farm relief details later this month

By

DAVID LUCAS,

farm reporter

South Island east coast farmers will have to wait until at least June 19 to hear details of a redrafted drought rehabilitation package. Modifications to the Government’s carry-on finance scheme will be presented to the Cabinet on that date, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, told farming leaders yesterday. A delegation of Federated Farmers’ representatives from the four South Island drought-affected districts met Mr Moyle to emphasise the need for an urgent decision on the future of the carry-on package. Farmers and financiers have described the package as unworkable in its present form. A spokesman for the delegation, Mr Oliver Grigg, of North Canterbury, said Mr Moyle was aware of the urgency. Mr Grigg said he hoped the refined package would offer help to farmers, but he did not want to speculate on the type of assistance.
