Soccer split denied
NZPA-AFP London A claim that England’s five biggest soccer clubs are on the point of quitting the Football League has been strenuously denied. Responding to the allegation by the Coventry chairman, John Poynton, that Arsenal, Everton, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham were committed to joining a European super league in 1992, the Everton chief executive, Jim Greenwood, said yesterday it was a figment of Mr Poynton’s imagination. Mr Poynton claimed that all the “Big Five” wanted to do now was to take the money from television and the football pools, and run. But Mr Greenwood replied, “I cannot understand what he’s talking about, 'taking the money and running.’ There’s no question of that.’’
