Stewards give trainer 12-month disqualification
NZPA-AAP Brisbane Queensland Turf Club stewards have disqualified dual Stradbroke winning trainer, Danny Duke, for 12 months on an improper conduct charge. Duke, who trained top sprinter Daybreak Lover to win the 1984 and 1986 Elders (Stradbroke), was found guilty of assaulting fellow trainer, Joe Mauloni, in a float area at Caloundra’s Corbould Park racetrack last Saturday. Duke pleaded guilty to the charge but said he had been provoked. Duke has a team of 12 horses, including several
promising youngsters, in work at Doomben. Duke’s nephew, Gladstone plumber Larry Jensen and Tanawha company director, Bob Byers, a registered trainer, both gave evidence to the inquiry. The inquiry followed the success of the Duketrained Soul Star which won the Maiden Handicap (1000 m for two-year-olds, at her debut. She was heavily backed to start 7-4 on favourite. Duke, who clashed heatedly with stewards after the inquiry, is considering an appeal.
