Danny Morris boosts Games bid

Danny Morris, of Canterbury, has drawn level with Barry Galbraith (Nelson) in their quest for the welterweight position in the New Zealand Commonwealth Games amateur boxing squad. If Morris does cap an impressive comeback by gaining Games selection, his victory over Galbraith in last weekend’s South Island Golden Gloves tournament at Temuka will be seen as a significant stepping stone. As a bonus, Morris was chosen as the most scientific senior boxer after controlling his bout with Galbraith. Earlier this season Morris had started strongly against his Nelson rival, only to fall behind on points over the second and third rounds. At one win each, Morris and Galbraith are assured of

at least one more meeting before the sport’s selectors make their Games nominations. Morris was one of four competitors from Peter Bell’s gymnasium to win Golden Gloves titles. Royce Ellis was a unanimous winner over Ben Ah Chong (Invercargill), Dean Calvert scored a second round knock-out over Mark Dawson (Invercargill), and Jason Perreau gained a split decision over yet another Southlander, Brendan Thomas. Sefo Lakong, a light welterweight, performed well to give Kevin Barry’s gymnasium victory over Gary Morris (Bell’s), and Ipolito Falaniko (Woolston W.M.C.) beat Andrew McDonald (Timaru).
