Becoming a country music performer was the last thing on the mind of a Motueka singer, Donna Quayle, when she joined a country music club in 1983. Quayle, aged 26, has since amassed a formidable list of country music awards and trophies, including winning the yodelling section of this year’s Gold Guitar Awards held in Gore at
Queen’s Birthday weekend. She also reached the finals of the duo section of the Best of the West competition in Westport last month. Known as Donna Maree, Quayle is a founder member of the Motueka Country Music Club. She joined as a supporter but was encouraged to sing and play the guitar and has been a performer since. Quayle enjoys the easy
listening style of country music and the people she meets through it. She per l forms at clubs, hotels and private functions through*out Nelson, Golden Bay and the West Coast. Her next ambition is to record her music. “I would like to keep working to promote country music in New Zealand and to encourage people to keep on with their music and not get disillusioned about not winning awards,” she said.
