Muldoon: world improving

Political reporter World conflict is diminishing, the Powers are coming together, and economic co-operation has never been higher, says the former Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon.

European trade policy attitudes remained protectionist, and there were still high levels of uncertainty in international financial markets, he told a Lions Club meeting in Waipu last evening.

But harmonious international relations did not just extend to the contacts between the United States and Soviet administrations.

Iran and Iraq had uneasy peace, the Soviet Union had withdrawn from Afghanistan, and the Vietnamese from Cambodia. Indonesia and China were friendlier, as were Taiwan and China.

Sir Robert said speakers at a recent meeting he had attended in the United States regarded the initiatives of the Soviet leader, Mr Gorbachev, as “genuine and important.”
